Hydrophobic electrodes were prepared by composite plating of high hydr
ogen overvoltage metals (zinc and lead) with fine particles of hydroph
obic materials-poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE), tetrafluoroethylene o
ligomer (TFEO) and fluorocarbon ((CF)n). The electrodes were used as c
athodes for electroreduction of organic compounds to give current effi
ciencies and product selectivities higher than those of similarly comp
osite-plated nickel electrodes which have been previously reported.
