Dr. Tribble et al., GASTROINTESTINAL VISCERAL MOTOR COMPLICATIONS OF DERMATOMAL HERPES-ZOSTER - REPORT OF 2 CASES AND REVIEW, Clinical infectious diseases, 17(3), 1993, pp. 431-436
Motor complications are uncommon manifestations of herpes zoster. This
report describes two cases of gastrointestinal visceral motor manifes
tations associated with dermatomal herpes zoster and reviews the Engli
sh-language literature since 1900. The 17 cases reviewed were divided
clinically into two groups: colonic pseudo-obstruction and localized c
olonic spasm. Characteristics of the patients, radiographic study resu
lts, endoscopic findings, proposed pathogenesis, and management option
s are discussed. It is important to recognize this manifestation in or
der to institute proper management and avoid unnecessary surgery, give
n the complete resolution with conservative management in most cases.
