The article discusses the corrections needed for eddy correlation meas
urements of momentum fluxes in the atmospheric boundary layer to encou
rage a thoughtful use of other people's data. The research rose from a
question posed in the HEXOS program. After identifying the correction
s they are successively treated, with the main emphasis on the consequ
ences of flow distortion. It turns out that for moderate to low distor
tion all corrections but one can be made to an acceptable accuracy. Th
e remaining correction can by accident be neglected for the specific d
ata used in this paper. Some general advice is given to judge the impo
rtance of flow distortion effects in a given situation.
