Abstract
A one dimensional model of hydrophysical fields and small-scale turbul ence in the oceanic upper layer and a new semi-empirical scheme for pa rameterization of turbulent and convective mixing are discussed. A pro cedure to simulate turbulent patch generation in the pycnocline leads to formation of thermohaline fine structure. Computations based on the combined upper layer and pycnocline models are compared to data obtai ned in the North Atlantic.
