There is ample evidence to show that MIS departments are lagging behin
d other departments in their contribution to CIM development. MIS Prof
essionals tend to feel more comfortable with Big Blue and its ability
to handle accounting, finance and planning data than they are at manag
ing robots and programmable controllers. Most MIS graduates have not h
ad a course in Fortran, nor are they familiar with UNIX V, both import
ant to product and process engineers, whose expertise is usually respo
nsible for CIM development.
