We report experimental differential cross sections for inelastic scatt
ering of electrons from helium atoms in the presence of an intense (ap
proximately 10(8) W cm-2) carbon dioxide laser. The cross sections for
excitation of the 2P-1 state of helium with the simultaneous absorpti
on or emission of one laser quantum were measured over the incident el
ectron energy range of 36-70 eV and scattering angles of 13-31-degrees
