Distomum mormyri Stossich, 1895, is redescribed from the intestine of
Lithognathus mormyrus L. in the western Mediterranean. This descriptio
n is justified by the inadequacy, by modern standards, of the original
description which was based on only two specimens. D. mormyri has rar
ely been found subsequently. Following a careful search, several speci
mens were recovered, permitting the allocation of this species to the
genus Macvicaria Gibson & Bray, 1982 as M. mormyri n. comb. A key to t
he opecoelid parasites of sparids in the western Mediterranean, with a
list of their hosts, is included.
