The expressions for the displacements caused by a point displacement d
islocation in a two-phase medium are integrated analytically to obtain
the displacement field produced by a finite rectangular fault in a ho
mogeneous, isotropic, elastic half-space in welded contact with anothe
r homogeneous, isotropic, elastic half-space. The results are valid fo
r arbitrary values of the Poisson's ratio of the two media and for arb
itrary observer locations. The variation of the displacement field wit
h the distance from the interface as well as with the distance from th
e fault is studied numerically. The displacement field in two welded h
alf-spaces is compared with the corresponding field in a half-space an
d in an infinite medium. Contour maps showing the deformation of the m
edium around a rectangular strike-slip fault are also presented.
