The absorption and the emission spectra of the ionic species formed by
3-carboxyquinoline and 3-amoniquinoline, in aqueous solution, have be
en measured. The constants governing the prototropic equilibria betwee
n the ionic species in the group and lowest singlet excited state have
been estimated. In the ground electronic state of 3-carboxyquinoline
it is found that the equilibrium observed, at varying pH values, is du
e to the simultaneous equilibria of the carboxylic and amine groups an
d so, the dissociation constants obtained from these spectra is an app
arent magnitude.
