We have studied the simultaneous absorption of SO2 and O2 in a tank co
ntaining solutions of MnSO4 stirred at 400 rpm, with a practically fla
t gas/liquid-interface. We observed that with volumetric fractions of
SO2 above 0.1 a flat profile can be assumed for SO2 in the liquid phas
e and that with a 0.025 M concentration of MnSO4 a fast-reaction regim
e is reached, and thus the rate controlling step is the absorption of
O2. We confirmed the fast-reaction regime by altering both the speed o
f stirring and the initial volume of the liquid phase. By varying the
volumetric fraction of SO2 between 0.1 and 0.67 we determined that the
reaction orders for SO2 and O2 are 0 and 1 respectively and by varyin
g the concentration of MnSO4 up to 0.05 M we obtained an apparent reac
tion order of 1.25.
