Previous research has produced contradictory results and ambiguities i
n regard to the global precedence effect. In the present study, the gl
obal-local relationship is discussed in association with perceptual or
ganization and the concepts of part and whole. The global-local relati
onship is classified into four major categories: inclusion, placeholde
r, featural and dimensional. Any of these relationships may or may not
be accompanied with a semantic relationship between the two levels.
