Abstract
When copper/epoxy joints are pretreated with 1 wt.-% solution of gamma -aminopropyltriethoxysilane (gamma-APS) in ethanol, the coordination b etween the copper ions and the amino groups of gamma-APS and 4,4'-diam inodiphenylmethane could bring about self-reinforcement of the metal/a dhesive interphase when the joints were exposed in 3% aqueous NaCl sol utions for 160 d. This is also confirmed with a model experiment by pr etreating the aluminium substrates with gamma-APS solution containing moderate amounts of copper salts and subsequent formation of the alumi nium/epoxy joints.
