Rp. Dziak et al., ESTIMATION OF SEA-FLOOR ROUGHNESS SPECTRAL PARAMETERS FROM MULTIBEAM SONAR ACOUSTIC BACKSCATTER DATA - AXIAL SEAMOUNT, JUAN-DE-FUCA RIDGE, Geophysical research letters, 20(17), 1993, pp. 1863-1866
A new method to estimate seafloor roughness spectra applies the surfac
e backscatter model of Jackson et al. [1986] to multi-beam sonar backs
catter data. The use of principal components analysis, following spect
ral estimation, derives a single mappable index from correlated spectr
al parameters. This index can be mapped as a continuous field correspo
nding to geological observations in the area. This method allows for q
uantitative delineation of the neovolcanic zone and other zones of vol
canic and tectonic activity from hull-mounted sonar systems.
