This paper deals with an experimental investigation on the signal qual
ity of a hot film anemometer located in the vicinity of a vortex flowm
eter exposed to different levels of swirling flow. The results show th
at the Strouhal frequency can be identified for swirl indices as large
as 0.5. The signal quality remains identical to the zero swirl case f
or swirl indices smaller than 0.3 and drops linearly thereafter. As th
e swirling flow inhibits the vortex shedding, the signal level reduces
and is distributed over a larger frequency bandwidth.
