Abstract
This paper describes a method for determining the refractive indices o f nematic liquid crystals with positive dielectric anisotropy with an accuracy of 2%. The results of a measurement of the refractive indices n(e), n(o), and DELTAn for tolan derivatives are presented. The refra ctive indices are shown to be functions of the orientation of the subs tituents in flexible chains.
