A device has been developed for protecting vehicle drivers against bli
nding nighttime glare. The device activates at an illuminance level of
1.4-2 lux on the driver's eyes and reduces the light flux from the he
adlights of oncoming traffic by a factor of 10-50. The technological f
eatures of the light shutters based on the twist effect in nematic liq
uid crystals are described, and the angular dependences of the device
transmittance are given.
