Neofuscelia halei sp. nov. is described from Spain and the Canary Isla
nds. This species, named in honor of the late Dr. Mason E. Hale, Jr.,
differs from the related N. verruculifera (Nyl.) Essl. primarily by it
s production of alectoronic and gyrophoric acids as major medullary co
mpounds, rather than divaricatic acid, and by its much more limited ge
ographic distribution.
