Abstract
Everyday, we are made aware of the increase in information, changes in technology, and other factors that are having the effect of shrinking the earth on which we live. Key words in our society are ''Globalizat ion'' and ''Harmonization.'' This paper examines the two major systems in the world for dealing with hazardous (classified) locations. These two systems are those of the International Electrotechnical Commissio n (IEC) and the National Electrical Code (NEC). The classification sys tems will be compared, as will the methods of protection for Class I, Division 1, and Zone 1.
