Abstract
Partial 16S rRNA gene sequence comparisons have been used to determine the phylogenetic placement of the Elbe River isolate RW1, the first d escribed bacterium capable of complete mineralization of dibenzo-p-dio xin. Sequence similarities, cluster analysis and signature positions d emonstrate that RW1 groups with other species of Sphingomonas as a dis tinct, new species of this genus.
