K. Elze et Hj. Selbitz, DIFFERENTIAL-DIAGNOSIS, TREATMENT AND PRE VENTION OF RESPIRATORY-DISEASE OF CALVES, Tierarztliche Umschau, 48(9), 1993, pp. 581-587
Enzootic respiratory disease of calves is typified by a similarity in
the clinical signs, a peracute to an acute presentation of disease and
mixed infections. The immediate treatment of acute cases is necessary
to minimise the medical and economic effects. There is also a need to
identify the causal agent from analysis of the complex of clinical si
gns and to determine the location of the lesions and the degree of inf
lammation. An analysis of affected calves from 12 herds produced the f
ollowing results. One case of >>rhinopharyngolaryngitis<< in a 5 day o
ld calf with deep inspiratory dyspnoea infected with bovine entero-vir
us. Two cases of interstitial pneumonia in 5 day old calves with an ac
ute high intensity hyperpnoea following infection with parainfluenza-3
and chlamydia. Six cases of >>exudative catarrhal bronchopneumonia<<
with deep long inspiration infected with PI-3 and the initial stages o
f a pasteurella infection. Two cases of >>catarrhal purulent/fibrinous
bronchopneumonia<< with deep expiratory dyspnoea as a result of infec
tion with Pasteurella multocida and one case of >>peracute catarrhal b
ronchopneumonia<< with deep expiratory dyspnoea and the typical clinic
al signs of >>cattlegrippe<<.
