The polarizability of fullerene molecules in the gas phase was measure
d experimentally at a wavelength of 540 nm. The measurements have been
carried out in a free molecular flow of fullerene by the use of Rayle
igh light scattering. The absolute number density of fullerene has bee
n measured by a quartz balance. The value of the polarizability proved
to be 10(-21) cm3, that is an order of magnitude greater than the one
calculated by Fowler, Lazaretti and Zanasi.
