A multilayer semiconductor spectrometer for low-energy pions is descri
bed. Algorithms for energy reconstruction, identification of the pion
sign, and muon rejection are discussed, The results of test experiment
s on the spectrometer model are presented. The main parameters of the
spectrometer are: range of measured energies 3-25 MeV, energy resoluti
on DELTAE = 0.6 MeV, and rejection coefficients K(pi+/pi-) congruent-t
o 12 and K(pi-/pi+) congruent-to 10(3).
