Abstract
The paper presents the characteristics of scintillating YAlO3:Ce cryst als and describes the design of a reference light source for monitorin g multichannel electromagnetic and hadron calorimeters based on these crystals. The stability of the energy scale of the calorimeter for the NEPTUN (UNK) project is about 0.1% and is provided by the high energy resolution of these crystals when detecting alpha-particles (approxim ately 5%), its short decay time (28 nsec), and the linearity of the li ght yield for alpha-particles with energies of 4.8 to 8.4 MeV.
