Abstract
We have analyzed the structure of mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase i n terms of general characteristics thought to be important for describ ing the architecture of helix bundle membrane proteins. Many aspects o f the structure are similar to what has previously been found for the photosynthetic reaction center and bacteriorhodopsin. Our results lead to a considerably more precise general picture of membrane protein ar chitecture than has hitherto been possible to obtain.
