Polarographic and cyclic voltammetric studies of the redox bolaform el
ectrolyte alpha,alpha'-bis(oxypyridinium)-p-xylene dibromide were carr
ied out in a 5% (v/v) dimethyl sulfoxide-water mixture. The compound r
evealed a combined two electron diffusion-controlled cathodic wave whi
ch is independent of pH and found totally irreversible in the time sca
le of polarographic and cyclic voltammetric experiments. A tentative m
echanism for the reduction process of E(i)C(i) type is proposed. Vario
us kinetic parameters viz, transfer coefficient (alpha(n)), standard r
ate constants (K(S), K(fh)o) and diffusion coefficient (D) from polaro
graphic and cyclic voltammetric results are also evaluated.
