An isotropic, pyrolytic carbon is the favored material for mechanical
heart valve components. The question has been raised on the size of th
e threshold crack length for cyclic fatigue crack propagation. Prelimi
nary results are presented that indicate that the threshold length is
of the order of a millimeter at the estimated service stresses. Long l
ife tests also show no fatigue crack initiation in uncracked specimens
. Elastic properties and fracture toughness results are also reported.
