Ay. Simaranov et al., THE COMPOSITION AND PROTECTIVE PROPERTIES OF CHROMATE CONVERSION COATINGS ON MAGNESIUM, Protection of metals, 28(5), 1992, pp. 576-580
It has been established 1! that chromate conversion coatings (CCC) on
magnesium have the following structure: directly on the metal surface
is a dense layer of Mg(II) and Cr(III) hydroxides whose upper surface
is covered by a porous layer of Cr(OH)3. This latter layer forms as a
result of the selective dissolution of Mg(OH)2 from the dense layer.
It has been shown that an increase in the thickness of the dense layer
inhibits the corrosion of magnesium in chloride solutions.
