Abstract
The non-Gaussian character of the probability density functions (pdf's ) of binary signals dominated by signal-spontaneous and spontaneous-sp ontaneous beat noise in erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFA's) is expe rimentally verified and their impact on the operation of decision circ uits in optically preamplified digital receivers discussed.
