Extraction of Eu and Am from HNO3 by podands containing phosphoryls in
o-nitroethylbenzene is studied. The extraction ability (EA) of the po
dands is determined by the length of the polyether chain and the struc
ture of the terminal groups. The podand Ph2P(O)(CH2)2O(CH2)2P(O)Ph2 ha
s EA similar to that of carbamoylphosphine oxides. Adding rigid o-phen
yl groups to the polyether chain causes a sharp drop of he EA of the p
odands. The EA of certain podands significantly increases if the dilue
nt polarity is increased. Bidentate coordination to metals for these p
odands and a possible anomalous aryl effect in these systems are propo
sed.
