J. Yu et al., EFFECTS OF A STATIC MAGNETIC-FIELD ON SUB-DOPPLER MOLASSES - MANIPULATION OF CESIUM ATOMS, IEEE transactions on instrumentation and measurement, 42(2), 1993, pp. 109-114
We present an experimental investigation of the effects of magnetic fi
eld on cooling and trapping of neutral atoms. Applied to optical molas
ses, a static magnetic field often produces spectacular effects. It ca
n induce either a sub-Doppler cooling effect or shift a sub-Doppler-co
oled atomic sample away from its zero-velocity position. Some of the e
ffects can find potential applications in the manipulation of cesium a
toms (deflecting an atomic beam or launching an optical molasses into
an atomic fountain) and can probably be used in the development of fut
ure cesium atomic frequency standard. The observed experimental effect
s are interpreted by simple physical models and calculations.
