The population of the 0+ 0.228 MeV isomer of Al-26 has been measured i
n projectile fragmentation reactions at E/A = 65, 80, and 100 MeV. For
beams of Al-27 and Si-28, the yield of the isomer was found to be app
roximately equal to that of the ground state, whereas for Ar-40 beams
it was much weaker. The significance and utility of the surprisingly h
igh isomer yields is discussed.
