One hundred sixty-seven sera collected from human immunodeficiency vir
us (HIV)-negative blood donors (n = 41), asymptomatic HIV-positive pat
ients (n = 75), and patients with AIDS (n = 51) were compared in a met
abolism inhibition serological test employing antigens to four distinc
t Mycoplasma species. The proportion of sera with antibody titers of g
reater-than-or-equal-to 1:32 to Mycoplasma genitalium was significantl
y higher for patients with AIDS than for HIV-negative blood donors. Se
rological relationships between Mycoplasma pneumoniae and M. genitaliu
m as well as the possibility of increased susceptibility of AIDS patie
nts to infection with these two mycoplasmas might account for this fin
ding. Few sera showed antibody responses to Mycoplasma pirum or Mycopl
asma fermentans.
