In the superbasic medium dimethylsulfoxide/KOH, potassium p-fluorobenz
ene-sulfonate (1) can be treated with PH3 Eq. (a)!, or primary or sec
ondary phosphanes to afford water-soluble phosphanes (3) containing su
lfonated aromatic groups. The trianion P(C6H4-p-SO3-)3! in 2 . KCl .
0.5H2O is the first in this class of compounds that could be character
ized by X-ray crystallography.
