Erbium-doped fiber amplifiers are analyzed by solving numerically Maxw
ell equations and propagation-rate equations of a homogeneous three-le
vel laser medium. A finite-element code is used to account for the eff
ect of spatial mode distributions and erbium concentration profile, wh
ile an iterative procedure, based on the Runge-Kutta algorithm, allows
to compute both gain and amplified spontaneous emission spectra. A co
mparison of the performance of 1480 and 980 nm pumped amplifiers is pr
esented. The effect of different erbium concentration profiles on ampl
ifier performance is also investigated.
