Rk. Onions et Cj. Ballentine, RARE-GAS STUDIES OF BASIN-SCALE FLUID MOVEMENT, Philosophical transactions-Royal Society of London. Physical sciences and engineering, 344(1670), 1993, pp. 141-156
Rare gases are conservative tracers of subsurface fluid movement. The
mass balance of atmosphere-derived and crustally produced radiogenic a
nd nucleogenic rare gases in natural gas reservoirs allows straightfor
ward constraints to be placed on scales of fluid movement in sedimenta
ry basins. The details of large-scale fluid movements in Neogene sedim
entary basins appear to differ according to their thermal structures.
