The Gordon-Haus limit restricts the distance of repeaterless propagati
on of solitons. Recently, it was found that judicious placement of fil
ters can extend the limit. This discovery makes soliton communications
competitive with other means of long distance signal transmission. Th
is article reviews some properties of solitons, the developments since
the first proposal of Hasegawa to use solitons for long distance tran
smission, and the recent work on control filters.
