A. Wahba et al., RECURRENT MALIGNANT FIBROUS HISTIOCYTOMA OF THE LEFT ATRIUM IN A 27-YEAR-OLD MALE, European journal of cardio-thoracic surgery, 7(7), 1993, pp. 387-389
We report a case of recurrent malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) of
the left atrium. The primary lesion was surgically removed after it ha
d been diagnosed to be the cause of fulminant pulmonary edema in a 27-
year-old male. The tumor recurred 15 weeks following surgery. It was e
xcised completely, leaving a large left atrial defect that was reconst
ructed using a Dacron patch. Malignant fibrous histiocytoma constitute
s 2% of all cardiac malignancies. The typical location is the left atr
ium. Surgical excision is the primary aim in treating this tumor. Adju
vant radiotherapy and chemotherapy have been suggested in the literatu
re. The prognosis is poor.
