A linear polymeric structure has been revealed for the alkoxide Mg(OCH
2CH2OMe)2 formed by bridging alkoxides, with additional bonding from c
helation of the ether group to give a coordination number of six. In M
g(OCH2CH2NMe2)2 and Mg(OCH2CH2NH2)2 a similar polymeric structure has
distortions about the metal, presumably due to stronger electron donat
ion by the amine groups. The infra-red spectra of some dioxane adducts
of MgX2 (where X = Cl, Br, I) have been recorded. They show the prese
nce of a two-dimensional polymer: halogen bridges form linear chains t
hat are cross-linked by dioxane units in the chair configuration.
