Diabetic ketoacidosis is a frequent cause of morbidity and mortality i
n the patient with type 1 (insulin-dependent) diabetes mellitus. It co
nstitutes an acute medical emergency and hence, its management remains
an important issue for physicians concerned with the care of diabetic
patients. In the past decade, a considerable volume of scientific pub
lications has contributed towards a better understanding of the pathog
enesis, metabolic derangement, complications and management of this di
sorder. This article reviews these recent advances as they pertain to
diabetic children and adolescents.
