Abstract
The Cretaceous/Tertiary section in Haiti consists of the alteration pr oducts of palagonite, smectite and zeolites (>95%), black glass (1%), and yellow glass (<0.01%). The alteration products are typical decompo sition products of volcanic glasses. The black glasses are of an andes itic-dacitic composition, a clear indication as to their origin. The r are yellow glasses contain melilite crystals and are considered to be assimilative reaction products formed during the rise of the igneous m agma through the overlying limestone/ marl formations.
