Hm. Temin, RETROVIRUS VARIATION AND REVERSE TRANSCRIPTION - ABNORMAL STRAND TRANSFERS RESULT IN RETROVIRUS GENETIC-VARIATION, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United Statesof America, 90(15), 1993, pp. 6900-6903
Human immunodeficiency virus variation is extensive and is based on nu
merous mistakes in reverse transcription. All retrovirus replication r
equires two strand transfers (growing point jumps) to synthesize the c
omplete provirus. I propose that the numerous mistakes in reverse tran
scription are the result of this requirement for the two strand transf
ers needed to form the provirus.
