W. Bijl et Ra. Janknegt, SINGLE-DOSE VERSUS 3-DAY PROPHYLAXIS WITH CIPROFLOXACIN IN TRANSURETHRAL SURGERY - A CLINICAL-TRIAL, Urologia internationalis, 51(2), 1993, pp. 73-78
in 235 patients who underwent transurethral surgery, perioperative ora
l ciprofloxacin prophylaxis was given as a single dose 500 mg versus a
3-day regimen. Out of 180 evaluable patients, 84 received a single do
se and 96 received a 3-day course. In the single dose prophylaxis grou
p there were 5 failures and in the 3-day prophylaxis group there were
6 failures. The difference is not significant. In 17 patients whose ur
ine culture preoperatively yielded microorganisms the 3-day prophylaxi
s significantly eradicated the bacteriuria in 83% of the patients.
