A synthesis of H-3!R- and H-3!S-4-amino-3-phenylbutanoic acid (H-3!
R- and H-3!S-beta-phenylGABA) from the unsaturated intermediate by ca
talytic hydrogenation using tritium gas in the presence of palladium o
n charcoal is reported. The H-3!R- and H-3!S-diastereoisomers of pan
tolactone ester of beta-phenylGABA were separated by HPLC.
