Abstract

In the sixteenth century, a time of religious and social upheaval, nat uralistic theories of generation were joined to ideas that monstrous b irths were divine signs. In this paper, we explore how medicine and th eology were combined to explain the almost cataclysmic religious, soci al, and political events of the century. (C) 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc.
