The results of several imaging modalities for the evaluation of parath
yroid adenoma in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism are present
ed. Different modalities (sonography, magnetic resonance tomography, c
omputerized tomography, thallium-technetium-subtraction-scintigraphy)
were performed in urinary stone patients after establishing the diagno
sis by repeated measurements of serum calcium and serum parathyroid ho
rmone. Sonography showed the best diagnostic efficacy (64 %). By combi
ning different imaging modalities a diagnostic efficacy of 90 % was ac
hieved. It is concluded that an interdisciplinary evaluation in patien
ts with proven hyperparathyroidism should be initiated by the urologis
t and thyroid exploration should be recommended to the patient.
