Adrenal medulla hypoplasia or even aplasia are rare but severe side-ef
fects of therapy by estrogens. This paper presents a review on this su
bject. Dose-independant effects of estrogens may be observed on dogs o
f both sexes. In the time-course of therapy, the animal must be follow
ed up to stop the administration as soon as the first symptoms occur :
debilitation, mucosal petechias, ecchymosiis, anemia, hemorrhagic dia
rrhea and strong modifications of leukocyte counts. The pronostic turn
s to very bad in thrombocytopenia lasts for more than two weeks. Treat
ment associates non estrogenic anabolics, lithium and blood transfusio
ns.
