Abstract
Adrenal medulla hypoplasia or even aplasia are rare but severe side-ef fects of therapy by estrogens. This paper presents a review on this su bject. Dose-independant effects of estrogens may be observed on dogs o f both sexes. In the time-course of therapy, the animal must be follow ed up to stop the administration as soon as the first symptoms occur : debilitation, mucosal petechias, ecchymosiis, anemia, hemorrhagic dia rrhea and strong modifications of leukocyte counts. The pronostic turn s to very bad in thrombocytopenia lasts for more than two weeks. Treat ment associates non estrogenic anabolics, lithium and blood transfusio ns.
