General anaesthesia is often used by equine practitioners. Its inducti
on still needs to be driven very carefully, because of the risks of ac
cidents or postoperative complications. Thus, such a management involv
es a methodic and careful preparation. The whole procedure must be per
fectly controlled in all its bearings, from the administration of anes
thetics till the techniques for leading horses to recumbency. Differen
t data for technical choice in this sphere are reviewed here. The anes
thetics currently used and some of their combinations for general anes
thesia in the horse are then reported. Different technical organizatio
n and devices for inducing recumbency in the horse are described.
