A survey of the use of cyclo- and poly(phosphazenes) in fire resistant
applications is presented. Where appropriate, synthesis and commercia
l availability will be indicated. Two fundamentally different approach
es, phosphazenes as additives or as intrinsically flame resistant mate
rials, will be discussed. While the former category is limited to cycl
ophosphazenes, the latter involves linear poly(phosphazenes), cyclolin
ear and cyclomatrix materials and carbon chain polymers with cyclophos
phazenes as substituents.
