A first-order perturbation analysis of the orthogonal canonical forms
of linear multivariable systems is presented. To avoid ill posedness,
a numerical system structure is defined which is invariant to small pe
rturbations in the data. It is shown that the orthogonal canonical for
ms may be unreliable tools for numerical controllability analysis, sim
ilarly to the system controllability matrix.
