DIRECTIONS FOR THE CORRECT USE OF ZOOLOGI CALLY RELEVANT SPECIES NAMES FOR OUR DOMESTICATED AND LABORATORY-ANIMALS, WITH REFERENCE TO THE CURRENT LATIN NAMES OF THEIR PARENT SPECIES
W. Meyer et al., DIRECTIONS FOR THE CORRECT USE OF ZOOLOGI CALLY RELEVANT SPECIES NAMES FOR OUR DOMESTICATED AND LABORATORY-ANIMALS, WITH REFERENCE TO THE CURRENT LATIN NAMES OF THEIR PARENT SPECIES, Schweizer Archiv fur Tierheilkunde, 135(5), 1993, pp. 156-164
This study is concerned with the correct use of the scientific zoologi
cal nomenclature for domesticated and laboratory animals. With the hel
p of four tables, additionally, the most current latin names of all im
portant domesticated animals (animals of economic importance, ranch-br
ed animals, companion animals, fancy animals laboratory animals) are g
iven. The authors suggest a formal nomenclature for domesticated anima
ls which should Principally be related to the scientific name of the p
arent species (binominally and in italics), as always followed by the
completion <<forma domestica / f. dom.>> (not in italics). Problems ar
ising from the use of such scientific names when hybridization and int
rogression is concerned are also discussed, and appropiate nomenclatur
e is proposed.
